Swimming finished its weeklong run at the Olympics, and it was mostly seven days of glory for the United States. Brad Bridgewater won the 200-meter backstroke, Amy van Dyken won her fourth gold medal, and the U.S. men set a world record in the 400 medley relay. That gave the Americans 13 gold medals in the pool. Track and field began with Michael Johnson advancing in the 400 meters, and the U.S. came within a pitch of a perfect game in softball and lost to Australia.
