For two days, the field in the CVS Charity Classic assaulted par on the wet and windless Pleasant Valley course at Sutton, Mass. When the breeze picked up and the greens firmed, John Cook pulled away.

After two rounds in a three-way tie for the lead, Cook shot 67 on Saturday to stand alone at 14-under-par 199. That gave him a three-stroke lead over former champion Bruce Fleisher and four strokes over Russ Cochran.

“With the wind picking up, it gets a little tricky out there,” Cook said. “Some of the holes that weren’t that difficult the first couple of days are different now. You’ve got to think a little bit harder.

“But that’s why we’re professionals. You’re supposed to be able to do that.”

Walter Morgan birdied three of the last six holes following a long rain delay to take a one-stroke lead over Ray Floyd after the second round of the Ameritech Senior Open at Long Grove, Ill.

Morgan, 55, shot a 70 for an 11-under 133 total on the Kemper Lakes course. Floyd, who won the Senior Players Championship, shot a 65.

After played the first 12 holes in two-over, Morgan came back from a rain delay to birdie Nos. 13, 15 and 18.

Using a new, much shorter putter, Chi Chi Rodriguez had seven birdies in round of 66 to pull within five strokes of Morgan.

Vicki Fergon didn’t follow a brilliant round with a stinker, leaving her on the verge of ending a 12-year drought.

Fergon, who has won two LPGA events in 20 years on the tour and none since 1984, shot a 68 for an encore to her tournament-record 63 a day earlier and took a six-stroke lead after three rounds of the Heartland Classic at St. Louis.

Playing in light rain most of the day, Fergon opened with a 20-foot putt for birdie on the first hole, was three-under at the turn, added a birdie with a seven-footer on No. 11 and maintained the rest of the way. She missed only one fairway Saturday, has missed only three all tournament and has gone 37 holes since the last of her two bogeys, both coming in her opening-round 71.
