Californian Crew Retains Soling Lead

Racing off Savannah, Ga., in winds that never topped eight knots, Californians Jeff Madrigali of San Anselmo, Kent Massey of Mill Valley and Jim Barton of Fairfax finished the day in first place in Soling. Kris Stookey of Darien, Conn., and Louise Van Voorhis of Webster, N.Y., were tied for first in the women’s 470 with Spain’s world champions, Theresa Zabell and Begona Via Dufresne.

The U.S. Soling trio finished fifth in its second race Saturday, but still held a one-point lead in the overall standings.

In the men’s double-handed dinghy, Americans Morgan Reeser and Kevin Burnham rose from ninth to fourth overall by winning the first race and placing 11th in the second.

John Lovell of New Orleans and Charlie Ogletree of Columbia, N.C., are tied for third in the Tornado Class.

David Giles and Colin Beashel of Australia held the lead in the Star Class.
