A cutting remark in the courtroom:

A jury candidate in Ventura County was asked by the judge whether he recognized the prosecutor in the case.

“No,” he said.

“You don’t?” asked the prosecutor. “I used to be your barber.”

“Dee?” the man said. “Dee Corona? Is that you?”

Yes, it was Deputy Dist. Atty. Dee Corona, who cut hair while attending law school several years earlier. Naturally, Corona trimmed her former customer from the list of jury candidates.

COME BACK AND WE’LL CHANGE YOUR NAME: Maggie Bryan of Culver City and her white cockatiel Lola were close. “He’d stand on my head 16 hours a day,” said Bryan, who works at home. “He’d have slept on my head if I’d let him.”

Alas, in early June, Bryan walked outside with the pet on his usual perch and, when a neighbor walked toward her, the bird flew off.

The neighbor “had a hat on and I think [Lola] panicked when he saw the brim of the hat coming toward him,” Bryan said. “He flew up into the sky and I thought he’d turn around but he went east and just kept going.”

Though she is offering a reward and has put up posters, including one that Sal Lombardo of West L.A. spotted, Bryan has yet to find Lola.

Oh yes, about that name. “The person who gave him to me named him Lola,” Bryan said. “She thought he was a girl. But he never laid any eggs so he must be a boy.”

SANTA MONICA--ON THE MOVE: It looks as though the People’s Republic of Santa Monica has marched into Orange County and conquered defenseless Tustin. Look at the address yourself (see accompanying). It appeared on an envelope that was enclosed with a parking ticket that a motorist received in imperialistic Santa Monica. We just hope that Santa Monica doesn’t align itself with the secessionist leaders of the San Fernando Valley.

HOST TODAY, GONE TOMORROW: The radio profession isn’t the most stable one in the world. While most people don’t have 10 employers in their lives, talkshow host Joe Crummey has had that many bosses in just the last few years, including five so far in 1996. Here’s a recent countdown for Crummey (his real name):

* KSDO, San Diego (“I remember one day hosting the morning show, 5 to 9 a.m. at KFI, then getting into my car and driving to San Diego to go on the air there at noon.”)

* KFM, San Diego.

* New Jersey, 101.5 (“Yes, it’s in New Jersey.”)

* KMPC-AM--KLSX (“I think I sat in the same seat as Kato.”)

Add this to your list of L.A. restaurant milestones. It was a visit to the landmark Chasen’s restaurant on Beverly Boulevard that inspired actor Paul Newman to get into the salad dressing business, according to an A&E; television special. Newman disliked the dressing at Chasen’s so much that he was sure he could come up with a better recipe.
