What a Wonderful World
Michael Johnson not only accomplished an unprecedented double by winning the Olympic 200 meters Thursday night in Atlanta, he shattered his world record in the process. Johnson, who already had won the 400 meters, bettered his mark of 19.66 seconds with a phenomenal 19.32 clocking. France’s Marie-Jose Perec earlier became the second woman to complete a 400-200 double.

Clarification--In some editions of Friday’s Times, a Page One caption said that Michael Johnson had become the first to win both the 200- and 400-meter races in the same Olympics. In fact, two women have done so.
