These Three Know What Is at Stake for Ramona
One thing about three of the six trainers saddling horses in Saturday’s $300,000 Ramona Handicap: They’re all well-versed in winning Del Mar’s most important grass race for fillies and mares.
Ron McAnally, who trains the Ramona high weight, Alpride, has won the stake three times; Charlie Whittingham, who’s running Pourquoi Pas, is a nine-time winner of the stake, including three consecutive with Flawlessly in 1992-94; and Bobby Frankel, who’s running Angel In My Heart, notched his second Ramona victory when Possibly Perfect won the race last year.
Alpride, fifth in the race last year, will carry 119 pounds, two more than Angel In My Heart, and Pourquoi Pass will carry 114 pounds. The others running in the 1 1/8-mile race are Real Connection, 110 pounds, Radu Cool (115) and Matiara (118). Chris McCarron, who rode Flawlessly to her three victories, will ride Alpride.
