Panel Backs Bid on Restoring Venice Pier

Share

A $4.2-million bid for the reconstruction of the Venice Beach pier is expected to be recommended today for approval by the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners. The Department of Recreation and Parks will recommend the bid submitted by Fletcher General Construction, said Dallan Zamrzla, director of planning and development.

The 1,200-foot-long pier was closed in 1986 after chunks of concrete fell perilously close to beach-goers below. Construction is slated to begin in mid-September and be completed in one year. Work will begin first on the western end of the pier to keep beach disruption to a minimum.

Funding will come from $3.5 million from a 1992 park bond, Prop A, and the remaining $700,000 from the sale of city-owned land in Venice.
