McNamara Hobbled By Calf Injury

Manager John McNamara showed up for work on crutches, the result of a strained right calf muscle suffered 10 days ago while taking a treadmill test during a physical exam in Nashville, Tenn.

McNamara, 64, watched the game on television from the couch in his office and attempted to manage via walkie-talkie. But he ended up hobbling down the tunnel a couple of times and using the phone.

McNamara made the mistake of taking the lengthy treadmill stress test in his loafers instead of tennis shoes. After three days of tests, he was declared otherwise in great shape, with the exception of the calf injury, which has run a very strange course.

“When I got here [trainer] Rick Smith said I had a knot in my calf the size of a Titleist,” McNamara said. “Then that went away, but by the end of Friday night’s game my ankle was so swollen it looked like I had elephantiasis. Now, it’s moved down to my heel and the arch of my foot.

“All I know is, it hurts like hell. I couldn’t even get out of bed this morning.”

Left-hander Chuck McElroy, who left Saturday night’s game because of numbness in his left hand, said the feeling was back Sunday morning. “It’s sore is all,” he said. “I think maybe I just slept on it funny or something. Maybe it’s just another result of that black cloud that’s hanging over this whole clubhouse.”. . . George Arias, Randy Velarde and Chili Davis homered in the sixth inning, the first time the Angels had hit three home runs in one inning since July 14, 1990 when Dave Winfield, Brian Downing and Dante Bichette accomplished the feat against Toronto. . . . Pitcher Rich Monteleone, on the disabled list because of a back injury, will return home to Tampa today for therapy.
