New System Speeds Transfer of Money to Mexico
County residents who want to send money to Mexico can do it faster and more safely through a new electronic money-order system set up on a test basis in Ventura, postal officials said.
Ventura is one of only a few cities in California chosen to test the program Dinero Seguro, which means “safe money.” Through the program, money can be sent to individuals in Mexico in a matter of minutes instead of days.
Dinero Seguro is available at the following post offices: Main Station, 675 E. Santa Clara St.; East Ventura Station, 41 S. Wake Forest Ave.; Montalvo Station, 2481 Grand Ave., and Saticoy Station, 11047 Citrus Drive.
Dinero Seguro is being tested in 16 post offices in Southern California and several cities in Texas. The four post offices in Ventura are the only test sites in Ventura County.
Expansion is planned throughout California and Texas early next year. Other markets across the United States also will be included on the network in the future.
Dinero Seguro involves a partnership between the Postal Service and Bancomer, the largest retail bank in Mexico with about 900 branches. Postal officials are exploring the possibility of getting Sepomex, the Mexican postal service, involved in the program.
