Carwash to Raise Scholarship Funds

Share

The San Fernando Valley Opportunity Through Education Scholarship Fund will hold a carwash Saturday to raise money for scholarships.

The scholarship fund was started last year by Patricia Franco, a parole agent with the California Youth Authority. Franco received a $500 award from the American Justice Institute in recognition of her community work. She decided to use the prize as seed money for a scholarship to encourage average kids to strive for a better education.

This spring the scholarship fund awarded more than $16,000 to local high school teenagers. The money was raised through carwashes and other fund-raisers as well as a letter-writing campaign.

Students are awarded scholarships of $1,000 or $500 each, based on their grades as well as community service. Unlike some scholarships that are awarded only to students with outstanding academic records, the scholarship is open to any high school student with at least a C average who has been involved in his or her community. The student must live in the Valley.

The carwash will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chevron station at 1100 Truman St., at the intersection with Maclay Avenue.
