Richard R. Rogan, attorney, state prosecutor and influential Democratic Party leader, has died. He was 82.

Rogan, a fourth-generation Southern Californian, died Wednesday at Providence-St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank of complications after a heart attack, said family friend Dick Turpin.

Rogan had served as chief deputy attorney general from 1959 to 1963 under then-state Atty. Gen. Stanley Mosk.

Rogan also held federal appointments in Washington, D.C. as special assistant to the U.S. attorney general, personnel officer in the executive office of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and executive secretary to the Board of Economic Warfare. He served in the Navy during World War II.

In politics, Rogan gained national influence through his friendship with John F. and Robert F. Kennedy and toured with them in their presidential campaigns. He represented California in the Federation of Young Democrats. Within California, he also served on the Democratic county committee and state central committee.

Rogan, who retired from the private practice of law in 1990, served as president of the Burbank Bar Assn. and the San Fernando Valley Bar Assn. and was elected board member of the State Bar of California.

He was a graduate of Burbank High School, Glendale College and UCLA, and met his wife of 53 years, retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mary Goode Rogan, when both were law students at Yale University. When not serving as government legal experts, the couple practiced law together in their Rogan and Rogan firm, which became Rogan and Radding.

Rogan earned prizes from the American Bar Assn. and other organizations for his avocations--oil painting and photography. He and his wife, who traveled to Ireland annually for a number of years, co-owned and rehabilitated an Irish castle once owned by director John Huston.

In addition to his wife, Rogan is survived by their five sons, Patrick, Michael, Brian, Dennis and Rick; a daughter, Maria, and nine grandchildren.
