Kotsay Signs With Marlins

Mark Kotsay, a former college player of the year at Cal State Fullerton, signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins that includes a signing bonus of $1.125 million. Kotsay, the ninth pick in the June draft, reported to the Marlins’ Class-A team at Kane County, Ill. . . . San Francisco Giant third baseman Matt Williams will have season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Saturday. . . . Moises Alou and David Segui of Montreal and Jeff Juden of Houston have appealed their suspensions resulting from Monday night’s brawl between the Expos and Astros. Houston’s John Cangelosi decided Thursday not to appeal and will start serving his four-game suspension today. Henry Rodriguez of the Expos and Danny Darwin of the Astros will decide today whether to appeal. . . . San Diego reliever Trevor Hoffman agreed to a three-year, $8.4-million extension with the Padres. . . . The Astros announced they will retire Nolan Ryan’s No. 34, making him the first player in major league history to have his number retired by three teams.
