Troy Dumais of Ventura beat defending champion Dean Panaro on the one-meter springboard Thursday to win his first national title at the National Diving Championships in Moultrie, Ga.

Dumais, a 16-year-old Buena High student being touted by many as the next Greg Louganis, beat Panaro by 15 points and is believed to be the youngest male diver to win a national crown. Louganis, who won a record 47 national titles, won his first at age 18 in 1978.

Dumais, a 14-time national junior champion and double gold medalist in the 1995 World Junior Championships, narrowly missed making the 1996 U.S. Olympic team on platform with a third-place finish in the Olympic trials. Louganis won a silver medal on platform in the 1976 Olympics.
