U.S. Requires Impact Study for 710 Freeway Extension

The U.S. Department of Interior informed Gov. Pete Wilson this week that, in its view, an additional environmental study of the proposed Long Beach Freeway extension must be done before the federal government can make a final decision on the roadway.

The latest setback for the 6.2-mile project comes in a letter from Deputy Secretary John Garamendi to the governor.

“We feel his support for a supplemental study is significant,” said Jeannine Gregory, city clerk for South Pasadena, which has fought the freeway since 1965. “Without federal funding, this project will never be built.”

Garamendi cited concerns over historic buildings along the corridor through Pasadena, South Pasadena and El Sereno. The study could take two years.
