Ventura Boulevard Plan

Re “Ventura Boulevard Plan Finally Brought in Balance,” Aug. 11.

It’s going to take a whole lot more than new trees and new sidewalks to make Ventura Boulevard more appealing.

How about all of the grotesque signage, drooping banners and hot-air balloons that loom over buildings, and shop owners who display merchandise on the sidewalks in the name of advertising? Will there be rules governing these things?

What about wastebaskets--the bigger the better, and made of cement so they can’t be moved. Has anyone noticed how people can sit at a bus bench and throw trash on the ground, even with a wastebasket less than 10 feet away?

No two ways about it, Ventura Boulevard is dirty and junky, and no one seems to care.

It is for these reasons that I propose a concerted campaign aimed at instilling a concern for the place that we live, whose theme would be simply “Have Pride in Your City” and (in foreign languages) “Have Pride In Your Adopted City.”

I know that we have just ended a similar campaign, “Together We’re the Best.” What a waste of money that was. How could it have had any meaning unless we really are the best?
