Unser Stranded, Andretti Wins

Michael Andretti passed Al Unser Jr.’s disabled car on the final lap Sunday to win the Indycar Texaco/Havoline 200 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

It was Andretti’s fourth victory of the season and the 34th of his career.

In an event filled with caution flags, the Mercedes engine on Unser’s Penske race car blew while he was in the final turn.

Bobby Rahal finished second, followed by rookie Alex Zanardi of Italy.

Scott Sharp won his first Indy car race, the IRL True Value 200 at the New Hampshire International Speedway. It was the first victory for A.J. Foyt as an owner.

John Force of Yorba Linda won his 10th Winston Funny Car victory of the season at the Champion Auto Stores Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota. Other winners were Kenny Bernstein in the Top Fuel division, Warren Johnson in the Pro Stock division and Matt Hines of Whittier at the $1,169,050 event, the 14th stop in the 19-race, $27-million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

Dale Jarrett won the GM Goodwrench 400 at Brooklyn, Mich., his fourth victory of the year. Mark Martin, winless in Winston Cup racing this season, had led for 87 laps before Jarrett passed him with seven laps remaining and eventually won by 0.168 seconds.

Canadian Patrick Carpentier, who clinched the Toyota Atlantic drivers championship by earning the top qualifying spot, won his sixth series race from the pole at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.

Tennis

Tamer El Sawy of Egypt successfully defended his title in the Bronx Classic, beating doubles partner Pablo Campana of Ecuador, 6-1, 6-4. In the women’s final, fifth-seeded Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain beat Amelie Mauresmo of France, 6-4, 6-3.

Spain’s Carlos Moya put friendship aside in the Croatia Open final, beating countryman Felix Mantilla, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4), at Umag.

Soccer

The national soccer teams of Guatemala and Honduras played to a 1-1 tie in an exhibition game in front of a capacity crowd of 18,000 at East Los Angeles College in Monterrey Park.

Guatemala, which will face the United States in World Cup ’98 qualifying play this fall, got a headed goal from Juan Plata in the ninth minute off a Julio Giron free kick.

Honduras tied it in the 66th minute when Alex Pineda sent the ball to Nicolas Suazo, who outraced two defenders and beat goalkeeper Edgar Estrada from 10 yards.

Boxing

Jorge Paez of Mexico won the WBC Continental Americas junior-lightweight championship at Caesars Tahoe, knocking out Narcizo Valenzuela, also of Mexico, in the third round.

Miscellany

Troy Dumais, 16, won the men’s 3-meter springboard on the final day of the Phillips 66 National Diving Championships at Moultrie, Ga. Olympian Becky Ruehl won the women’s 10-meter platform.

Olympic gold medalists Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes beat third-seeded Scott Ayakatubby and Brian Lewis, 15-13, 7-2, in the final of pro beach volleyball tour event at Belmar, N.J.
