JETHAWK REPORT : They Were Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’

The JetHawks’ 6-1 loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm on Monday night was a little tougher for Manager Dave Brundage to take because of a couple lackadaisical plays on the bases.

Mike Lanza and Shane Monahan each trotted to first base instead of hustling down the line, Lanza on a bouncer to the pitcher and Monahan on a pop fly to left field.

“It surprises me that would come from a couple guys who are two of our most competitive,” said Brundage, who had a short meeting with Lanza and Monahan before Tuesday night’s game.

“It just disappoints me that in a game that important in a season, when you need to win, and you get a pitching performance like that, to have guys just go up there and make easy outs.”

The JetHawks had only four hits, wasting a solid effort by left-hander Trey Moore, who was charged with four runs in 7 1/3 innings. It followed Sunday’s game, when Brett Hinchliffe gave up one earned run in 6 2/3 innings, but the JetHawks lost, 5-2.

“The last two games we lost we had a chance to win if we could just have gotten more than one or two runs,” Brundage said. “When you get pitching performances like that, you’d like to see the end result be a W.”

One of the few highlights for the JetHawks on Monday night was Chris Dean’s first home run since joining the team at the all-star break. The ball traveled an estimated 420 feet, making it one of the team’s longest home runs of the season.

“I haven’t hit one in so long,” Dean said. “I didn’t even look.”
