Joey Mixes Lounge Act With Camp --and Love

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It’s been a rough few weeks for Joey Sehee. The lounge-music artiste was recently decked by an irate restaurateur, jumped by four hoodlums in another incident, and is currently on crutches--the result of an off-night leap in go-go boots. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Joey, the name of the energetic singer’s current band, which just began a Monday night run at the Nightwatch in Hollywood.

Undaunted by his streak of bad luck, Sehee has decided the show must go on, which means that this Monday you can expect wheelchairs to spin and crutches to fly, all for the sake of art.

Sehee and his eight-piece orchestra--which includes D.J. Bonebrake (formerly of X) on drums and glockenspiel along with a flutist, a theremin player and a go-go dancer--offer entertainment on a par with the choicest Vegas lounge act. His Louis Prima meets Sammy Davis Jr. approach to performance is part schtick and part genuine, which is what makes this group such a delight. You get the camp element mixed in with enough love for the music that it’s not an attack on lounge culture but a celebration of its heart and silliness.

Adding to the impact is lounge music deejay Senor Amor, who gets the crowd warmed up with his danceable martini of tunes. The Wonderful World of Joey then gives its vibrant ‘90s spin on the popular music of the early ‘60s. Couple that with the Nightwatch’s stunning view, which offers a 19-story perspective of all that is camp and all that is heart in Hollywood, and you’ve got the ultimate cocktail a go-go.

* Wonderful World of Joey with Senor Amor on Mondays at the Nightwatch, 6290 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, 10 p.m.-2 a.m. 21 and over, no cover. (213) 871-2995.

The Buzz: Now that the town’s premier fetish dance club, the House of Flesh, is on hiatus after West Hollywood’s revocation of the 8240 Club’s entertainment permit, those who want their dancing mixed with a bit of naughtiness can check out the new Bog West club, held at the West End in Santa Monica on Wednesdays. Bog West promises “not just another night of industrial, sloppy New Wave, alternative and techno . . . but an evening in black,” whatever that means. . . . Here’s a new one: Studio City’s Aftershock club is giving away Hawaiian vacations at its Aloha Fridays promotion.

* Bog West, (818) 377-5131 or (213) 656-3905. Aftershock, (818) 752-9833.
