Venus and Mars lie together in Gemini in the morning sky. Brilliant Venus is high in the eastern sky at 5:30 a.m. Mars, which is much fainter, is a short distance to the lower left of Venus, while Castor and Pollux--the Twins--lie a similar distance to the left of Mars. Venus and Mars are at their closest on Aug. 31. Orion is at the right, and the Great Dog (marked by Sirius) is below Orion.
