Hospital Lays Off Several Workers

Hoping to stay abreast in the competitive health care business, Simi Valley Hospital has laid off fewer than 10 administrative and clerical workers as part of a minor reorganization.

JoLynn de la Torre, a spokeswoman for the hospital, declined to say exactly how many workers were let go last week. But she did say that none worked directly with patients and most were not full-time employees.

The 225-bed hospital employs about 870 people.

“It’s very minor stuff,” De la Torre said. “We’re talking about less than 1% of the people that work for this organization, less than 10 people in all.

“As health care changes on a daily basis, all health care corporations have to shift to concentrate on the areas of [the] business that are successful,” she added.

De la Torre said the hospital is seeing an increased demand for ambulatory care as well as rehabilitation and home care, and has decided to slightly downsize administration. Jay Evans, administrative director of ambulatory care, was the highest-ranking person to lose his job.

Simi Valley Hospital made a profit of $413,000 last year and is in sound financial shape, according to De la Torre.
