Inge Komers Broverman; Psychologist Researched Sex Roles

Inge Komers Broverman, 65, psychologist who pioneered studies of sex role stereotypes. Broverman published her results in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 1970 in the early days of the women’s movement. Her work and that of her colleagues at Worcester State Hospital were the foundation for later investigation of sex discrimination. She demonstrated that mental health clinicians practiced a double standard, perceiving men as naturally closer to mental health than women. Born in Vienna, she emigrated to the United States after World War II and earned a doctorate at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. She became a research psychologist at Worcester State Hospital, later taught at the University of Massachusetts and, since 1985, had been associate dean of psychology at the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara. On Aug. 12 in Santa Barbara of cancer.
