Schumacher Repeats at Belgian Grand Prix

Former world champion Michael Schumacher held off Jacques Villeneuve on Sunday to win the Belgian Grand Prix for the second year in a row.

Two days after crashing during practice, Schumacher proved he could still master Formula One’s most demanding track. He finished the 190.6-mile race in 1 hour 28 minutes 15.125 seconds. Villeneuve, driving a Williams-Renault, trailed by 5.602 seconds.

McLaren-Mercedes driver Mika Hakkinen of Finland finished third, 15.710 seconds behind the winner.

Golf

Phil Mickelson regrouped after trouble on the back nine to pick up birdies on 16 and 17 and win the World Series of Golf at Akron, Ohio.

Mickelson started the day with a three-shot lead and ended up winning by that same margin. He frittered away his lead with bogeys at 8, 12 and 13 to fall into a tie with Billy Mayfair and Duffy Waldorf.

Mickelson clinched the $378,000 first-place check and a 10-year tour exemption by rolling in a six-foot birdie putt at 17.

Laura Davies shot a two-under-par 70 for a three-stroke victory in the Star Bank LPGA Classicat Beavercreek, Ohio, the English star’s fourth LPGA tour win of the year. She had a 12-under 204 total. Maggie Will shot a 68 and Pat Hurst had a 69 to tie for second.

Jim Dent broke out of a three-way tie with a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the $800,000 Bank of Boston Senior PGA championship. Dent, 57, rallied from two strokes off the pace for a five-under-par 67 and a 54-hole total of 204, beating Tom Wargo and Jay Sigel by one shot.

Tennis

Third-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa warmed up for the U.S. Open by defeating unseeded Australian Todd Woodbridge, 6-2, 6-4, to win the du Maurier Open at Toronto and collect $288,000.

In the doubles final, the fourth-seeded team of American Patrick Galbraith and Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands defeated third-seeded Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Mark Knowles of the Bahamas, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Fifth-seeded Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine beat Martin Damm of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 6-3 in the final of the Hamlet Cup at Commack, N.Y.

Track and Field

World and Olympic 110-meter hurdles champion Allen Johnson defeated record holder Colin Jackson at the McDonald’s Games at Sheffield, England.

Johnson pulled away from Jackson and another British rival, Tony Jarrett, to win in 13.23 seconds. Jarrett placed second in 13.25 and Jackson tied for third with American hurdler Steve Brown in 13.36.

Tom Pukstys twice broke his United States javelin record with throws of 284 feet, 7 inches, and then 284-10.

Mari Carmen Diaz won the women’s division of the Mexico City Marathon for a third time, finishing more than three minutes ahead of Maria Elena Reyna.

Juan Salvador Gonzalez won the men’s title in 2:20.14, followed by Martin Rodriguez at 2:21.13.
