PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : Peete Expected to Play in Eagle Opener

Philadelphia Eagle quarterback Rodney Peete will apparently play in the season opener at Washington.

Peete practiced Sunday with a brace on his left knee, which he sprained when hit by New England’s Willie McGinest an Aug. 18 exhibition game.

“He was able to do everything we put him through,” Eagle Coach Ray Rhodes said.

Team doctors had thought Peete would be sidelined for two weeks to a month, and Ty Detmer started the Eagles’ final exhibition game. Also Sunday, Philadelphia released quarterback T.J. Rubley.

Eddie Murray, a 17-year veteran who ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list and second in points scored by kicks, was released by the Washington Redskins in favor of rookie Scott Blanton, who kicked collegiately at Oklahoma. Murray, 40, is also six short of the record for consecutive points after touchdowns held by Tommy Davis of San Francisco at 234. . . . The Minnesota Vikings put linebacker Ed McDaniel and running back James Stewart on injured reserve, and cut Chad May, last year’s third-string quarterback. McDaniel, who injured his left knee on the second day of training camp, will have surgery. Stewart suffered a broken left leg in the team’s final exhibition game. . . . Tight end Lovell Pinkney, who left the St. Louis Rams last season to attend the Million Man March in Washington, D.C., was one of seven players cut by the team. The Rams also cut running back Brent Moss and put tackle Gerald Perry on the left squad-retired list. All 10 of this year’s Ram draft picks made the roster. . . . Anthony Morgan, who started eight games and caught 31 passes at wide receiver for Green Bay last season, was cut by the Packers. Morgan was bothered by a sciatic nerve condition for almost a month in training camp and lost out to free agents Don Beebe and Desmond Howard, who are also kick returners. Green Bay also cut former USC quarterback Kyle Wachholtz. . . . The San Francisco 49ers cut rookie linebacker Sam Manuel of New Mexico State but his twin brother Sean, a wide receiver, made the team.
