Airlines Scale Back Fare Hikes: Some U.S. carriers rolled back the increases after less than a day, bowing to competition and the realization that consumers will balk at a 20% rise in ticket prices in less than two weeks. Several carriers had raised fares Tuesday as the 10% federal passenger excise tax returned, adding to an existing 10% fare increase imposed earlier in the month. When USAir and Northwest did not pass on the cost of the reinstated excise tax to consumers, rival airlines rescinded their short-lived fare hikes. American, Delta and United said they scaled back pricing.
