Without Contract, Ducks’ Oksiuta Will Skip Camp

Mighty Duck forward Roman Oksiuta won’t report for the opening of training camp Saturday if he remains unsigned, said Oksiuta’s agent, Rich Winter.

Oksiuta, the Ducks’ third leading scorer last season, is one of three restricted free agents who don’t have new contracts. The others, defenseman David Karpa and center J.F. Jomphe, are expected to report anyway, unlike Oksiuta.

“He won’t be there,” Winter said Tuesday. “There’s no way he’d take the injury risk. He decided to stay at home until this is all worked out. That’s not a slight; it’s just a good, sound business decision.”

Oksiuta, 26, had seven goals and five assists in 14 games with the Ducks after being acquired from Vancouver in March in exchange for Mike Sillinger. He finished the season with 23 goals and 51 points in 70 games for the Canucks and Ducks. The only Anaheim players to score more were Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne, though each more than doubled Oksiuta’s production with 108 points.

Winter said he has had only limited contract discussions with Anaheim General Manager Jack Ferreira, who is in New York with Team USA as assistant general manager of the U.S. World Cup team. Like Oksiuta, Karpa and Jomphe are Group II free agents, meaning the Ducks can retain them by matching any offer from another team.
