Proposition 209

* Though women and minorities have made small but important gains since affirmative action began, progress has been slow. Women and minorities have barely a toe in the door in positions of political and corporate power. Yet this toehold seems to be frightening enough to the white, male power structure to cause the current backlash of proposals like Proposition 209.
We need affirmative action until the Congress, federal judgeships and corporate boardrooms reflect the gender and ethnic diversity of the American people. We need affirmative action until we have a colorblind society. We need affirmative action until the thought of “Ms. President” doesn’t sound like science fiction.
