To say traffic was bad in and around San Francisco on Wednesday was a major understatement.

Car wrecks stopped traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge and the Caldecott Tunnel. An apparent suicide attempt halted BART trains. And a crane accident shut down roads leading to and from San Francisco International Airport.

“I don’t know what to say,” California Department of Transportation spokesman Jeff Weiss said. “These accidents happen, but unfortunately they’re happening on the same day.”

The commuter headaches occurred just one day after Caltrans officials warned of major delays due to the closure of the quake-damaged Central Freeway.

They said residents returning from August vacations would clog the thoroughfare that passes over the middle of San Francisco. However, those problems had not materialized.
