Member of Border Gang Convicted

A member of a border-area street gang who was a suspect in the murder of a Roman Catholic cardinal was convicted Friday of re-entering the United States after being deported.

Adolfo Alberto Marin-Cuevas, 30, known as “Night Owl,” faces a maximum sentence of 9 1/2 years in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 25. A member of the Logan Heights Red Steps gang, which operates in the United States and Mexico, Marin has an extensive criminal record.

Marin was a suspect in the fatal shooting of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posada Ocampo and six other people at the Guadalajara airport on May 24, 1993. He was arrested in San Diego on drug charges the next month. After being convicted he was turned over to Mexican authorities. In February, 1995, Mexican courts freed him as a suspect in the cardinal’s murder.

Seven months later he was spotted by San Diego police but escaped. He was arrested in Ocean View, Wash., in February.
