The executive director of the deep-water Port of Hueneme has been elected to a yearlong term as president of the California Assn. of Port Authorities.

William J. Buenger, who runs Ventura County’s only commercial port, said he is honored to lead the statewide trade association for the dozen deep-water ports in California.

“I’m delighted to take on the assignment for the next year,” Buenger said Monday. He said he has no specific agenda to pursue as president, but he wants to “maintain the course” of his predecessors.

The Oxnard Harbor District is the port authority for the Port of Hueneme, the only commercial harbor for ships between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Now fourth-largest of California’s commercial ports, its activity has mushroomed in recent years with increased exports of California citrus fruits to Asian markets and imports of bananas and automobiles from overseas.

Port officials said their operations contribute more than 2,700 jobs and $300 million to the county’s economy.
