Veteran Offers Free Disposal of Old Flags

When Old Glory has faded beyond repair, photographer Forrest Frields will help put it to rest.

The Vietnam veteran and Thousand Oaks planning commissioner is on a one-man campaign to dispose of tattered and battered flags of all kinds with dignity--by burning them.

After the rush of patriotism of the 1991 Gulf War and the ensuing flag frenzy, Frields saw a weathered banner stuffed unceremoniously in a trash can by the road.

He retrieved it, and a vocation was born.

“If [people] bring a flag to us, any time, any day, any time of the year, we’ll do the destruction in a dignified manner,” he said.

Flags for disposal may be dropped off at the following locations:

* Photography by Forrest, 100 N. Rancho Road, Suite 7, Thousand Oaks, 496-2255.

* Valley Oaks Memorial Park, 5600 Lindero Canyon Road, Westlake Village.

* Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge No. 2477, 158 Conejo School Road, Thousand Oaks.

* Thousand Oaks Photo, 587-G Ventu Park Road, Newbury Park.
