OUTLOOK

Miller, who was the football coach at Rancho Alamitos from 1987 to 1992 and rebuilt that program from the ground up, takes over a program that has averaged just one victory a season over the last four years. He already has gotten off to a rough start. Several players he was counting on this fall have been declared academically ineligible, leaving the Saints with a roster that consists of just 27 players. Still, Martin is keeping his chin up, even though only three starters return. “The attitude of the kids and the administration have been great,” he said. He also has brought along Joe Morales, the running back coach during Martin’s tenure at Rancho Alamitos. Morales developed some of the county’s best running backs in the early 1990s. “Assistant coaches can make or break a program and I have been very lucky to have such a good one,” Martin said. Correa, according to Martin, may be a diamond in the rough. Oropeza is recovering from an automobile accident and will be used in a utility role. Oropeza and Cooke provide decent size and strength. Unfortunately for the Saints, Martin sees things as they are and he knows it will take a couple of years to rebuild this program.
