Unlike the San Francisco Giants, the 49ers say they will need city money to build a stadium of their own. Carmen Policy, the 49er team president, said he wants San Francisco taxpayers to foot at least 45% of the cost for a new football stadium to replace Candlestick Park. Policy would prefer a clean 50% but will settle for less.

A referendum on the issue could happen by June 1997, sources told the San Francisco Chronicle. The 49ers’ lease at Candlestick expires in 2006.
