RETURNING STARTERS: Six on offense, Five on defense.

OUTLOOK: Meier recently made an honest assessment of Riverside’s troubles the last two seasons. “The reason was because I made some very bad decisions,” he said. “I tried to keep too many people happy.” With this in mind, Meier said he has returned to his hard-nosed ways in hopes of getting Riverside to a bowl game for the first time since 1993. Riverside, which has experimented with a wide-open passing attack in recent times, will employ more of a rushing style despite the return of Meier’s son Brent at quarterback. Reggie Williams, who gained more than 2,000 yards for Norco High last year, is a possible starter at running back. Torrence Wilson, who signed with Eastern Michigan but failed to meet the academic entrance requirements, is also a candidate to start in the backfield. Coleman Johnson, who earned a scholarship to Colorado but returned, will start at center. Judd Estrada, who is 6 feet 5 and 330 pounds, starts at one tackle. Meier said this year’s linebackers are the best group he’s had. Smitty Diecks and Matt Driscoll return at the inside linebacker spots. Diecks had 100 tackles last season and has added 20 pounds. Ty Wade, a transfer from Arizona State, will play at one of the outside linebacker spots. The strength of the linebackers could help cover up the lack of experience along the defensive line. Ken Jackson, another transfer from Arizona State, and Kalvin Williams, should start at cornerback.
