2 Cars Strike, Kill Man Using Crosswalk

A 40-year-old man walking his bicycle across a street died after one car struck him and another ran him over, authorities said Thursday.

Anthony Hewins was in a crosswalk at Lake Forest Drive and Serrano Road about 10 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a car that threw him a few feet, sheriff’s deputies said. Another car traveling behind the car then ran over him, Lt. Ron Wilkerson said.

“It appears that [the driver] could not avoid striking the body,” Wilkerson said.

Traffic detectives said they have not determined the speed at which Hewins was struck. Neither driver was cited, and the investigation is ongoing, Wilkerson said.
