City Might Condemn Properties

The City Council on Tuesday will consider condemning portions of four properties to complete improvements on Harbor Boulevard.

The roadway improvements, part of the Anaheim Resort Area Improvement and Beautification Program, are being made in coordination with the widening of the Santa Ana Freeway.

The city’s resort improvement plan is a $174-million program to revitalize and enhance the area around Disneyland.

The properties being considered are at 519 Ball Road and 1120, 1111 and 933 S. Harbor Blvd.

Offers to buy each of the properties were made to the owners to obtain the rights-of-way, but Public Works officials said they have been unable to reach agreements with the owners.

Russell Maguire, deputy city engineer, said the city wants to complete the street work before Caltrans begins reconstruction of the Harbor-Santa Ana Freeway interchange in May.

“If we don’t do our project, we will have a difficult time handling traffic,” Maguire said.

City staff will continue to negotiate, he said, but if that is not successful, the city will go to court to obtain the land and determine the amount of compensation.

The meeting begin at 5 p.m. in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. Information: (714) 254-5166.
