Four-Star Films : ‘The Heiress’

Share

A celebrated Broadway revival of the play based on Henry James’ “Washington Square” is currently at the Ahmanson, but in 1949 William Wyler filmed a highly polished, pictorially striking adaptation. It boasts an original score by Aaron Copland and excellent performances by Olivia de Havilland (pictured, as the plain and exploited spinster heiress), Ralph Richardson (as her protective father) and Montgomery Clift (also pictured, perfection itself as her heartless, manipulative suitor) (AMC Friday at 5 and 11 p.m.).
