Ideas Sought on Names for New Park

Share

Kimbaloma, Shilsholop, Barranca.

Heard of them? Probably not.

But names such as these could be in the running for Ventura’s newest city park, which is scheduled to open in January at Kimball and Loma Vista roads.

The city is seeking suggestions through Oct. 8 on a name for the new 4 1/2-acre neighborhood park. The park will have restrooms, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a grass volleyball court, a tot lot, a landscaped garden area, picnic spots and open fields.

A City Council resolution places some restrictions on park names. They must be in one of three categories. They can be named for the area in which they are located--geographic, topographic, major streets, community names or adjacent schools (Topa Topa, Lemon Grove . . . ).

They can be named after historically significant events (oil discovery, mission . . . ). Or they can be named for benefactors donating a major portion of the land or development funds for the park.

Submissions should include the proposed name and a brief explanation for why it would be suitable.

The Community Affairs Commission will review suggested names and recommend one to the City Council. The council is scheduled to make a final decision next month. Send names to Parks Manager Bill Byerts, P.O. Box 99, Ventura 93002.
