The rift between New York Islander General Manager Mike Milbury and holdout center Travis Green is near the point of no return.

After Tuesday night’s 2-0 exhibition loss to the New Jersey Devils in Uniondale, N.Y., Milbury, who had offered Green a three-year deal averaging $1.2 million, said Green requested a trade, something the player denies.

“I never asked to be traded,” Green, 25, said. “It’s obvious that Mike’s playing hardball. He’s not telling the truth.

Green had 24 goals and 69 points last season, his fourth with the Islanders, numbers second on the team to the 43 goals and 87 points of Zigmund Palffy, also holding out.

The Edmonton Oilers agreed to two-year contracts with free agent left wing Dean McAmmond and defenseman Donald Dufresne. Financial terms were not disclosed. McAmmond, 23, is coming off a severed left Achilles’ tendon. Dufresne, 29, had joined the Oilers in January as part of a trade with the St. Louis Blues. Edmonton is still faced with signing its two biggest stars: forwards Doug Weight and Jason Arnott. . . . Joe Juneau, the Washington Capitals’ leading power-play scorer the last two seasons, will be out four to six weeks because of a fractured right wrist.
