La Palma Expects to Move Recycling Center to New Site
Complaints about an aluminum and glass recycling center near the Civic Center soon will be resolved, City Manager Daniel E. Keen told the City Council this week.
The recycling center, situated in a shopping center at La Palma and Walker streets about half a mile from City Hall, has drawn criticism from a number of residents, among them Mayor Duane Schuster, who said the bins are visible from the street and are ugly and “tacky.”
A city staff report recommended that the City Council deny the recycling center a permit, thus forcing it to leave the city. But the council on Sept. 3 directed the staff to continue negotiations for a better location.
Keen told the council Tuesday that the talks paid off: The Ralphs grocery store at the shopping center will allow the collection bins to be placed behind the supermarket. Keen said a new permit application will come before the council in early November.
“I now don’t expect any problem at all,” the city manager said.
