El Segundo kept the ball on the ground and plowed through the Laguna Beach defense on its way to a 21-7 victory Friday at Laguna Beach.

On the Eagles’ first possession, junior running back Scipio Stubbs finished off a 42-yard drive with a three-yard run. Stubbs ran the ball four times for 47 yards in the drive for the Eagles (2-0).

Laguna Beach’s only highlight came midway through the first quarter when senior quarterback Marc Ornelas scrambled right, sliced through the defense and bolted 80 yards for a touchdown to tie the score, 7-7.

The Artist defense couldn’t contain Stubbs on the Eagles’ first possession of the second quarter. He had a 45-yard run and then scored from 21 yards out to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead.

Stubbs left the game with an ankle injury in the second quarter, finishing with 127 yards in nine carries.

The Eagles’ Bobby Gaines assumed the rushing load, carrying 16 times for 62 yards. He scored on an eight-yard run in the third quarter.

Laguna Beach had an opportunity to cut into the lead early in the fourth quarter when senior linebacker Nick Terrio recovered a fumble on the Eagle 21, but the Artists (0-2) failed to convert.

Ornelas led the Artists, completing 10 of 20 passes for 66 yards and rushing for 109 yards in five carries. Running back Kyle Sanico rushed for 42 yards in 15 carries.
