Streaking Redskins Pick Off Rams, 17-10

A week off to sort out quarterback difficulties didn’t do the St. Louis Rams any good.

The Washington Redskins intercepted three Steve Walsh passes and took advantage of favorable field position most of the day for a 17-10 victory Sunday.

Gus Frerotte had a touchdown pass and Terry Allen scored his fourth touchdown in as many games as the Redskins (3-1) made it three victories in a row for the first time since 1992.

“We think we have something special with this team,” said Allen, who scored on a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter. “Everybody wants to be in the big show and I think everybody’s working for that.”

The biggest play was probably by Tom Carter, who picked off an off-balance Walsh throw at the 13 with 2:40 left when the Rams appeared to be moving into position for a tying score.

“I was just sitting in the flat and the ball comes to you,” said Carter, who has three interceptions this season. “You have to catch it.”

The Redskins have won six of their last eight overall and three in a row on the road, including a 35-23 victory at St. Louis last December. The Rams, who are 2-4 in the TWA Dome, went seven quarters without a touchdown before Jermaine Ross scored on a three-yard run with 7:17 to play.

“Our offense is not operating at the highest efficiency,” said Frerotte, who completed 12 of 23 passes for 151 yards. “Our defense isn’t making any mistakes. They’re getting the ball back for us so we can keep moving.”

Walsh completed 18 of 36 passes for 177 yards, including 11 to Isaac Bruce for 136 yards. Allen finished with 78 yards in 23 carries for the Redskins.

The Rams (1-2) got their first score when nickel back Torin Dorn intercepted a pass that had bounced off the hands of Bill Brooks and returned it 40 yards. Three plays later, Chip Lohmiller kicked a 20-yard field goal with 9:34 left in the third quarter.

Thanks to good field position following a Sean Landeta punt, the Redskins needed eight plays to drive 49 yards and scored with a two-yard touchdown pass from Frerotte to Scott Galbraith, who made a one-handed catch in the end zone.

Marvcus Patton intercepted a Walsh pass at the St. Louis 34 to set up a 28-yard field goal by Scott Blanton to give Washington a 10-0 lead at halftime.
