Cell Phoners Can Report Polluting Vehicles

Share

AT&T; Wireless Services has joined forces with the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District to enhance the agency’s efforts to clear the skies of auto-emission air pollution.

Cellular phone users can now enter *SMOG (Star 7664) and be connected immediately with the APCD to report the license plate numbers of smoking vehicles on the roadways countywide. Although there is no fine involved, the offending vehicle’s owner will receive a letter in the mail advising of the emission problem.

Motorists who do not have cellular service can report offending vehicles by calling the number 1-(800) 559-SMOG.

“People really have responded well to this program, and we are delighted to expand it with AT&T; Wireless Services’ participation,” said Barbara Page, public information administrator for the APCD.

To kick off the campaign, AT&T; has donated the use of its billboard along the Ventura Freeway just east of the Vineyard Avenue exit in Oxnard to the APCD.

AT&T; Wireless Services has offices in Camarillo and Simi Valley.
