Contract Awarded for Computer System
The City Council on Wednesday approved spending more than $108,000 to buy a computer system that will enable public works crews to catalog most municipal facilities on a database.
Dubbed the Geographic Information System, the database will map city water mains, hydrants, sewer trunks and other projects, as well as allow planners, utility workers and transportation experts to access information more quickly.
The system “can be used in virtually all facets of municipal government,” said John Elwell, the director of public services, in a report to the City Council.
Council members agreed to award a $108,500 contract to James Engineering of El Cerrito to supply the computer project to city work crews.
The project is expected to be completed within eight months.
