Garage Sales, Auction to Raise Funds to Aid the Hungry, Homeless

Capping Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service Week will be several garage sales Saturday and a fund-raising dinner and auction Sunday

Proceeds from the events will be used by FIES, a nonprofit organization, to provide emergency aid to hungry and homeless people.

The organization, formed in 1985, operates the New Vista Transitional Living Center for homeless families. It also runs a distribution center where food is provided along with hotel vouchers and funding to help the poor pay utility bills and rent.

FIES officials said 33,000 people last year were helped by the organization, run by a coalition of 24 religious congregations and the local YWCA.

The City Council recently commended FIES for its work in the community, proclaiming the week starting Sept. 22 as FIES Week.

The garage sales, lasting from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be at the following locations: homes at 1607 Dorothy Lane, 347 W. Glenwood Ave. and 2108 Camino Centraloma, and at the First Christian Church, 109 E. Wilshire Ave.

The dinner will be served at Angelo and Vinci’s Restaurant, 516 N. Harbor Blvd., at 5 p.m. Auction bidding will begin at 7 p.m. Cost to attend is $25 per person. Information: (714) 525-7010.
