Construction to Begin on Recycling Station

Residents can get a glimpse of what will be the first recycling station in the South County area at a groundbreaking ceremony today off Ortega Highway.

Solag Disposal Inc. plans to build a $3-million recycling transfer station and maintenance facility on six acres leased from the Santa Margarita Co. a few miles from city limits.

When completed next spring, the new center will end Solag’s presence in the city’s 200-year-old Los Rios neighborhood, where the company has been storing its dump trucks for 25 years, said Solag spokesman Dan Batty. Solag recently moved many of its trucks from the neighborhood, but still uses the site for truck maintenance.

“All of Solag’s activities will be out of there by spring, once the new station is completed,” Batty said.

The new station will enable Solag to use fewer trucks to haul recyclables to a main facility in Stanton.

“It will make our service more efficient, which will help stabilize recycling rates, and people will save money,” Batty said.
