Group Donates Supplies to Skid Row School

Pencils, crayons, rulers, notebooks and three-ring binders: all standard supplies for schoolchildren, but not always affordable.

To help families at the Ninth Street Elementary School in the Skid Row area, Little Tokyo Cares--a nonprofit community organization--collected supplies throughout the summer.

Through churches, temples and other gathering centers in Little Tokyo, a community located just north of Skid Row, hundreds of supplies were gathered. On Monday morning, they will be delivered to the school at an assembly.

The supplies will be handed out at future parent-teacher conferences, where teachers will discuss with parents how to encourage better homework habits, said Michael Romero, the school coordinator at Ninth Street Elementary.

Parents are urged to set a specific time and place for doing homework every day, and the supplies donated from Little Tokyo are to be used at home, Romero said.
