Tense Farewell

Scores of mourners turned out Sunday for the funeral of 18-year-old Joseph Edward Gallegos, the troubled youth who gunned down three O.C. men in Bayfield, Colo., on Tuesday and was later shot by a police sniper. The mood at the Cortez, Colo., church was tense, as friends and relatives spurned reporters and focused on Gallegos’ efforts to turn his life around.

Down to the End

The Angels, who came within a game of winning the AL West in 1995, will finish this season today in last place. The disappointing result is difficult to explain, even for the players. “Trying to figure out this team is like trying to figure out a Rubik’s Cube in the dark,” pitcher Chuck Finley said after a loss in June. As October nears, that’s still true.

Waiting for Perot

The more than 400 people who contacted the Times Orange County edition as part of an unscientific survey supported Ross Perot’s inclusion in the presidential debates by a 3-to-1 ratio. “It’s only fair that Perot should be in that debate,” said Edwin R. Roth, 81, of Lake Forest. “We don’t want to end up with just two opinions on this thing.”
