Nebraska Bounces Back in a Big Way

Quarterback Scott Frost passed for two touchdowns and ran for another Saturday in leading No. 8 Nebraska to a 65-9 victory over Colorado State at Lincoln, Neb.

The Cornhuskers (2-1) who fell from No. 1 after losing, 19-0, at Arizona State, wore down a scrappy Colorado State (2-3) squad that moved the ball in the early going but couldn’t score.

“Maybe that needed to happen,” Coach Tom Osborne said of the loss to Arizona State. “You go so long without losing a game and you think that everything somehow is going to fall into place.”

Said Colorado State Coach Sonny Lubick: “They beat us in every way possible and I thought our team came out early and played as hard as it could. If we had made this play or that play, then maybe it would have been a little bit closer. But then we couldn’t stand up to them in the second half.”

Frost capped Nebraska’s first possession with a three-yard touchdown pass to Vershan Jackson. Ahman Green became the first Nebraska running back to rush for 100 yards this season, rolling up 163 yards in 22 carries.

No. 12 Colorado 24, Texas A&M; 10--Koy Detmer threw touchdown passes of 50 and nine yards and the Buffaloes had seven sacks and forced four fumbles in a Big 12 opener at College Station, Texas.

Colorado (3-1, 1-0) won its eighth consecutive road game, tying a school record and handing a rare home loss to the Aggies (1-3, 0-1), who are 63-4-1 at Kyle Field since 1985.

Greg Jones had three of the Buffaloes’ sacks of Branndon Stewart and Sean Jarne had two fumble recoveries.

The Buffaloes overcame school-record individual performances by Stewart (34-of-64, 385 yards) and Albert Connell (18 receptions).

Texas Tech 58, Utah State 20--Byron Hanspard ran for 224 yards, his third straight 200-yard game, and scored three touchdowns for the Red Raiders at Lubbock, Texas.

Texas Tech (2-2) put away the the Aggies (2-3) with 30 unanswered points in the second half.

Tulsa 31, Oklahoma 24--Backup quarterback Troy DeGar completed 18 of 38 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns, including a 99-yard touchdown to Wes Caswell, as the Golden Hurricane defeated the Sooners for the first time since 1943 at Norman, Okla.

Tulsa (2-2) had been 0-5 against Oklahoma since that victory.

Oklahoma (0-3) scored 17 third-quarter points to tie the score at 24, but failed to cross midfield in the fourth quarter.

Tulsa starting quarterback John Fitzgerald, who passed for 357 yards in the Golden Hurricane’s upset of No. 19 Iowa last week, didn’t play because of a shoulder injury.
