Steven J. Heyer Promoted to No. 2 Position at Turner Broadcasting

Share

In his first appointment as chairman, president and chief executive of Turner Broadcasting System, Terence F. McGuirk on Monday promoted Steven J. Heyer as his second in command. Heyer was named to the newly created position of president of the worldwide sales, marketing, distribution and international networks group of TBS, which will become an arm of Time Warner overseen by Vice Chairman Ted Turner if shareholders approve the merger in a vote next week.

Heyer has been president of Turner Broadcasting sales since 1994. He said he will focus on leveraging the strength of Turner’s combined cable family, which includes CNN, the Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, TNT and TBS.

As part of the road show to promote the merger to shareholders this week, Time Warner is positioning Turner’s family of cable channels as the nation’s biggest network. The company says that on a 24-hour basis, Turner’s networks reach an average 9% of all potential viewers.

Heyer’s hopes to capitalize on that reach to help bring cable advertising rates more in line with those of broadcasters, in part through clever bundling.

Heyer is one of three Turner executives serving on the steering committee charged with integrating the two companies. Before joining Turner, he was president of Young & Rubicam Advertising Worldwide.
