IRVINE — Woodbridge High School teacher Daniel Schmenk was suspended without pay Tuesday by trustees of the Irvine Unified School District after his arrest on suspicion of having sex with a former 16-year-old student.
The school board took the action in a closed meeting and made no comment.
On Monday, Schmenk, 51, of Irvine, was charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with the girl, a felony. He faces arraignment Oct. 25, an Orange County district attorney’s office spokeswoman said Tuesday. Schmenk is free on bail.
Schmenk, who taught English at Woodbridge for 13 years, was on leave from school to start a master’s degree program. He is married to another Woodbridge teacher.
He could not be reached for comment.
